Motorist shoots hijacker in foot

Johannesburg - A would-be hijacker was shot and wounded on Tuesday by the driver of the car he tried to hijack near Wemmer Pan in Johannesburg, police said.

Four men attempted to hijack the car on Mooi Street, polic spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini said.

"The victim was at the on-ramp of N17 when his vehicle was blocked by another car," said Dlamini.

"As he tried to make a U-turn, the suspects shot at his vehicle. The motorist got out of his vehicle and returned fire, shooting one of them in the foot."

Police arrested the wounded man and another man.

The two would appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court soon on charges of attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms.

I understand what stress can do, BUT I've heard from numerous gun owners that they will shoot to wound not kill? These guys need to start expecting resistance from us then only the hardened criminals willing to die will still try their luck, and not every unemployed guy with accesses to a gun or a replica pistol who think its easier to rob than work.

You shoot to stop the threat, aiming for whatever you are capable of hitting at the time. Your intent is to stop the threat, not to kill. If you do kill, it is an unfortunate consequence of SD. Either way, this was a success.

The article is too vague to know WHY he shot him there.

What it; He was being shot at and took cover behind his car, no way of shooting over the car so maybe he went under.
Aiming and actually hitting a foot sized target from underneath a car under those severe circumstances is actually commendable - it got him out alive, that was his goal.

Like I said, too little info to go by, that's just a possibility.
