Default Final thoughts on scope selection

    Hi everyone

So my new babies finally came home with me this week-
    308 Winchester Featherweight
    270 Winchester Supergrade

I'll be using them in everything from the KZN bush, through to the moordenaars Karoo.

I was looking at the following setups, and just wanted some opinions before I hit the "buy" button.

    308 Winchester Featherweight
    Leupold VX1 2-7x33 or 3-9x40 - LR Reticule
    http://www.leupold.com/hunting-shoot...nmuzzleloader/

    270 Winchester Supergrade
    Leupold VX1 3-9x40 or 4-12x40 - LR Reticule
    http://www.leupold.com/hunting-shoot...x-1-4-12x40mm/

Will mount the scopes on lowest rings possible.

Any thoughts on my selection on scope make, model, and magnification?

    Thanks

    Marshy

I looked at the VX1 when looking for a scope for my 30.06 but felt that the optics were clearer on the Vortex Diamondback. If I hadn't gone with the Vortex though, I would have taken the Leupold. I think either magnification you've mentioned would work well on the 308. For the 270 I think I'd go with the 4-12.

For me it doesn't seem to bad at all; on the .308 win I would go gor the 3-9 x 40 and the 4- 12 x 40 for the 270.

The Vx1's are fine ; i have vx2's and vx1's ; just shop around mate; ive noticed some real price differances lately. If you want a Leupold get it, i am not going into the brand argument; there are simply so many good scopes right now.

What I can suggest though; is to maybe get ONE scope NOW; and put it on the rifle you are going too use most and spend both your scopes budgets on one scope; then it is finish and klaar, and then you can start the process again and save up for scope number two. Just a suggestion; althaugh there isnothing wrong with VX1 glass.

    Exciting times ahead for you

Zeiss Conquest 3~9X40mm on both. Kicks my VX3 4.5~14X40mm ass thoroughly. Ergonomocally easier to use, brighter and less complicated. Fit the same to both.

I'd get the same vx1 3-9×40 on both
I personally found things larger than 9 gets very shaky and narrow. The benefit of having the same on both is that you should be able to seemlesly transition between the two.

x3 is sufficient for bush, and x9 is perfect for any normal plains distance (200m-300m max). I bet alot of guys has even been consistently successful at longer distances. with a x9 scope.

friend of mine has a 4-12x50. He only ever uses the x12 as a spotting scope. for hunting he turns it down to 8 or 9.

by the way the vx1 leupold is a lovely scope. plain and un complicated. very clean and solid design. looks good on the rifle.

Very few scopes beat the Leupold for looks. I have VXII on all my rifles. 3-9 on my 30-06 and 4-12 on my 243. Both 40mm. Scope prices are taking a beating because of the kak ZAR/$ exchange rate and economists aren't predicting a bright future for the ZAR in the next few months.

I agree with this. Just put one on my 308 replacing a Vortex with a higher mag. The Zeiss is awesome, eye relief is amazing.

Thanks for all the input gents! I just did a quick search, and can't seem to find any pricing on the Conquest 3-9x40. Any ballpark figures?
