Default 1851 Navy Colt replica on the range today

So we had a nice shoot today. One of the guys had a Chronometer there and were testing somebody's 9mm speeds. Averaged at approximately 1100fps.

I know my .38sp ammo (NGA) list the speed at 815fps.

I had my 1851 at the range as well today and we tested it with the standard 24gr Sanadex powder.
The average speed of six shots were 830fps. Not bad and everybody there were surprised and impressed. Especially one oke who joked before we tested the speed that he estimates it at somewhere near 500fps as he can see the ball leave the muzzle when I shoot, so slow is it. hehehehe

Was a great day and I had heaps of fun with my Mauser .22 and 1300 Shotgun. A perfect day.

Nice. I once used my Pietta 1851 Navy in .36 against a Glock 17. There were only 5 poppers each but I had all my poppers down before he did.

7 poppers or more would have been a different story, but thats why I had one in .44 as well.

The 1851 is still the most beautiful pistol ever.

Not surprising. I once properly embarresed someone with a G19 with my 1851 Navy Colt. My Colt is easily more accurate than my own Glock 19.

Friend has a Colt (make) 1851 Navy...probably 3rd Gen? for sale.
Considering picking it up for some fun. Have an original, but don't shoot it. They are great fun and surprisingly powerful and accurate.

Blackpowder is more fun than any modern firearm.

On Thursday I test fired my Lyman .54 percussion rifle. I put diopter peep sights on it. At 100 meters with a 215grain round ball I was getting a 5 or 6 inch groups; with 435grain Minie bullets a good 3 1/2 groups.

250 year old technology doesn't have the long range of modern rifles but I damn sure wouldn't want to be shot with one.

Shot some 6inch cube wooden cribbing blocks, which is a very hard, dense wood. At 100 meters it splinters them into toothpicks whereas a modern bullet just drills a hole through them.

Besides you get to cast your own bullets out of lead.

hehehe, I also don't want to be shot with one... especially as they liked the stuff to be .44 .50 .54 250 years ago instead of .303 .308 etc like today. those big pieces of lead flying around at 850fps out of a handgun (by the way, do you know what your Lyman .54 speed out of the barrel is?) is quite scary to be standing in front of....

Is powder still such an issue to find?

It appears that NSN has new stuff... almost sound like Sanadex, not sure of the name, and also packed similarly. One of my friends mentioned he got some a week or so back. Haven't been there myself to verify yet.
