Thread: Rust

    Default Rust

My Cold Steel Master Hunter's Carbon V uncoated blade is starting to show signs of rust.

Can anyone please advise on the best method and product to remove?

    Thanks.

Remember that carbon steel WILL rust. That is why the RAT knives are coated - not a reason not to like carbon steel blades as they are easy to sharpen and keep a good edge.

If you are not too worried about finish use a Lansky "rubber" to remove the rust and cote the blade afterwards with Sentry Solutions Tuff Glide/Tuff Cloth or Eezox - both will do a good a job of prevention in future.

If you don't care what the blade looks like as long as it stays sharp just dump some Coke (-a-cola!) on it and let the Phosphoric Acid convert the rust to Iron Phosphorus thereby phosphating the blade and protecting it against future rust.

Flitz is good stuff but is not an abrasive. It works via a chemical reaction. That may or may not work for what you need. You can also use Semichrome (wheel polish) or even toothpaste (a mild abrasive) or white finishing compound for cars. Even cornstarch is a very mild abrasive. Once removed, a thin coat of almost any decent CLP will work to prevent more rust.
