    Default The Dunning-Kruger effect.

    Reading a reference to Dunning-Kruger on another forum highlighted to me why some people do not know they don't know and what should be done about that.

    I do not purport to give a dissertation or that I am scientifically 100% correct and I am not lecturing anyone - read this and keep an open mind and take from it what you can if there is any value in it for you.

    The Dunning-Kruger effect is a phenomenon where people with little knowledge or skill think they know more or have more skill than they do. This occurs while simultaneously overlooking and/or underestimating the knowledge and skills of those involved in the task at hand.

    What to do about that? - Tell them that they do not know - if they are not told they will not know that they do not know.

    So imo do not take offense if someone on Gunsite differs from you and tell you why you are not correct in holding a certain viewpoint.
    Dunning and Kruger proposed that, for a given skill, incompetent people will:

    1. tend to overestimate their own level of skill;
    2. fail to recognize genuine skill in others;
    3. fail to recognize the extremity of their inadequacy;
    4. recognize and acknowledge their own previous lack of skill, if they are exposed to training for that skill.

    The Dunning-Kruger "effect" suggests that people who are not good at something tend to overrate their own ability and also lack the ability to recognize the superior skill levels in other people.

    The better one becomes at doing something or attaining a skill the better one will be able to understand and acknowledge that there are things you do not know or can do better.

    Also take note of the Four Levels of Competence:

    1. Unconscious Incompetence - you don't know that you don't know or have the necessary skills
    2. Conscious Incompetence - you know that you don't know or have the necessary skills but you are not doing anything to improve skills
    3. Conscious Competence - knowing you don't know and consciously working at improving skills
    4. Unconscious Competence - you attained skills you do not have to think about performing and perform it well without having to consciously work at it..

    I am a great proponent of this theory and have seen it in action daily, even in my senior exec's.

    You don't know what you don't know.

    Apply the theory to Malema, this will illustrate the theory fully.

    Great read.

    Also interesting to note that peer review is the best way to determine if you are skill levels are actually improving.

    Get to hang with guys better than you. Strive to emulate what you perceive as their strengths.
