Do you need competency before being able to apply for licence?!

My local DFO refuses to accept licence application for LM because I do not have the competency for this firearm.
Application for additional competency submitted a few months back for the LM at same DFO, comp application has gone to CFR so is registered on the system.

Do I have to wait for the competency before submitting is it best to wait?
I don't want the application for licence getting lost in CFR black hole, while they sort out the competency.

Another one for you submitted application for additional compency for shotgun on the same competency application as I already have handgun.
I submitted for ALL weapons types.
CFR come back to me tell me that shotgun is not on there WTF!
I filled in the forms I know I marked all the blocks!
CFR says sort it out at DFO in other words reapply for another additional cometency for shotgun!
All the while time ticks by, am going to be in the grave before all this gets sorted out!!
What do I do?

All I can add is that I have applied for competency & license at the same time twice.. never had a problem with the DFO..

They also told me that they no longer wait for the SSETA competency (or whatever) certificate to be sent to them anymore, as they are 11 months behind. Apparently they accept the certificate from the trainer for the moment.

According to Lyttelton DFO Sup your new license application just gets added to your competency application file and all then get processed together.

I am in a similar boat as my competency and handgun renewal applications were submitted in March 2009 and I aim to submit a new rifle application by the end of this month.

What competency did you do for the LM? Normal rifle competency or carbine?

Correct. LM should fall under rifle, it did when I did my competancy.
Hand-machine carbine competancy applies to SMG's like UZI, BXP etc.

Correct. LM should fall under rifle, it did when I did my competancy.

Those were the old unit standards.

The new ones refer to manually operated rifle and self loading rifle. If you do not have the certificate for the old Rifle standard then you need to do the self loading rifle standard.

hey goblin

in my humble opinion, wait for the competency since you've already applied for the additional ones. although it is possible, lazy, dumb and enueducated cops make our lives very difficult. they will not be able to bring the apps together so dont bother trying.

also, once you;re deemed competent, theres no real reason to be declined.

(thats cos they haven't seen you saftey skills (or the lack thereof grn1))

Ok, so I am alright as I did all 3 (rifle, shotgun, handgun) competencies when I jumped through the hoops in 2005 and have all 3 the certificates. Both my new hunting rifle and LM5 will be covered by the old rifle competency.

Depends on who you ask. Some senior supt.'s are of the view that you need HMC too.
