Default AR in 7.62 NATO vs 300 BLK

Which on is better and for what purpose? 7.62 or 300?

I have M&P15.22 for training and plinking. Great fun!

I have M&P15 in 5.56 for SADPA and perhaps one day some Zombies. Well made solid AR!

I NEED more power and I ordered the DPMS RAPR in 308/7.62. I think it will be great precision rifle for taking Zombies at a distance, up their nostrils.

Now I see that the NEA 300 BLK just landed and I read it is a lot of fun! Probably great SBR for SADPA and for defending your castle.

I am less concerned about the upfront capital cost, as I land up spending more on ammo than on the gun anyway. Running/ammo cost is probably more important for me as I intend running it hard for many years...

Any other observations, practical experience, cool factor ideas...?

While both are nice rifles, and can be used for many purposes, I personally think that in the event of another full-blown US panic 'buy ALL the ammo' situation, the 7.62x51 / .308 will still have plenty of ammo available (although expensive if things reach that point) when the .300BLK is likely to be 'unobtanium'. You won't be 'wrong' whichever one you choose IMO.

Just btw the 15-22 will make a way better zombie gun in any scenario except distance clearing beyond 100m

In SA 300 BLK is still an exotic caliber. There's no reason why that wouldn't change in the future, I just don't know how long that will take. Otherwise I quite like the results published about it, although I'll probably stick to 7.62 myself now that I'm a FAL man.

I was thinking about picking up an upper in 300 BLK for the hell of it since you can just slap it on a standard lower and run it w/STANAGS. I reconsidered when I saw the ammo prices; almost $1.25/rd(R12-R13). I can afford it, but why would I want to?

I'm sticking w/ammo commonality- 5.56, .308, 7.62x39; widely available and still relatively cheap here, although not as much as it was a couple/few years ago.

Like I said in another thread on another topic, we need more people to pick up the .300Blk. If it becomes a very widely used round it would become cheaper.

That being said, I'd probably also go for the 7.62x51mm AR. While you CAN get some exotic things for the .300Blk like the 220 grain sub sonic rounds, the general bulk ammo is 125 grains @ 2200fps, which is almost identical to the AK's round. While the ergonomics of the AR platform are far superior to the AK's, ballistic-ally you're not any better off. You could probably pick up an AK/Saiga and a crate of ammo for less than the .300 BLK AR, and not have to still pay way WAY more per round.

The 7.62x51mm will probably be easier and cheaper to find, although I suppose you'd reload the .300blk.

    Thanks for the feedback guys!

I am intrigued by the 300BLK, but I prefer to stick to the NATO standard (5.56 & 7.62), as gov tenders will drive prod volumes which should drive the cost per unit down.

Few additional consumers running 300BLK will hardly make a difference, except that more shops will be willing to stock it and perhaps discount it when inventory doesn't move fast enough.

Once again, I see 300BLK as a great SBR with optional suppressor to clear the house.

The AR in 308/7.62 will probably work better with a long-barrel as a precision rifle. Right?

Its a question of logistics/availability, the answer lies therein.

But who needs a sensible answer to buy guns......
Recent studies show that 1 out of every 3 liberals are just as dumb as the other 2
