    Default Jackal

I shot this jackal towards the end of September, at the start of our springbok lambing season.

    Rifle: Musgrave K98L 7x57.
Load: 139 Hornady Interlock BT spitzer @ 2650 fps.
    Range: 250 m.

In case you are wondering, the jackal was eaten by one of our workers who rate it above any other meat, despite him getting a monthly ration of blue wildebeest, eland or warthog. His, rather convulated, view on this is: "Hy eet dan net vars vleis, hoe kan hy nie lekker wees nie?"

Might sound wierd, but I'd like to taste some predators' meat myself. I do not plan to make a habit of it, but once out of curiosity would be something. (The mountain men in the USA swore on bear and cougar.)

If you look at fish, the predators are way tastier than the vegetarians (except for sharks, that is.)

... so how about some hyena filet for a starter?

    Eish!
No thanks, would be just like eating my own dog IMO.

    The smell is rather off-putting.

I've eaten one when I was younger, tastes like......jakkals. Now in never-neverland people think that most carnivores eat only the nice meaty parts. People should really visit me and I'll show them what my jakkals(blue heeler) does with a rabbit or dassie, nice meaty parts are eaten last.

Nice photo, if I were you I would rub it in with the problem animals guys, tell them you don't have time to waste you sommer shoot your jackal during the day.

With a 7x57 trundling along at a rather sedate pace, nogal!

As Messor have pointed out, often, if you know the exact range, you can easily compensate for bullet drop. Also, the rather sedate impact velocity ensures little meat damage and this pleases the end user considerably.

I wanted to post my 7x57 groupings from my range session today but I keep getting a message that I have exceeded my quota.
Anyway my best three shot grouping with the 150 grain Barnes TTSX was 11.2mm @ 2635fps and my best grouping with the 160 grain accubonds @ 2590 fps was 13.6mm.
I'll post pics as soon as my quota allows me.
    7x57 still a winner.

Does it taste like it smells? I'll eat it if I have to but I'm not going to eat it in preference to springbok!
