    Default Tanto Blades

    Hi Guys

Please tell me what are the advantages of a Tanto blade if any, over the normal blade configuration?

Which is a better choice for self-defence?

Teez, besides CDI ,that is with a tonto blade amongst other things,There is no issue of one been better that the other. The only thing to look out for is serrations on the blade if its used for SD,cos they suck.all though there is a place for them as it boils down to application like most things. The tonto style blade was originally used for armor piercing back in the day.Its the same as whats better double edged or single edged blades, again boils down to how and what you going to use the blade for. Also remember no matter what blade you decide on make sure it is razor sharp.

Morconza is correct about the armour piercing. the tanto point, when made correctly, has tremendous tip strength and durability. Cold Steel became famous due to their tantos. On their 'Proof' dvds they are shown being repeatedly stabbed through car doors and bonnets with no degradation. Lynn Thompson prefers the 'secondary point' style tanto, where an obtuse (more than 90 degrees) corner is formed by 2 relatively straight edges meeting, rather than a curved edge. this makes sharpening easier IMHO, and the secondary point is great for certain applications such as the snap-cut.

I carry a Cold Steel Kobun tanto, sadly discontinued now, and have trained the Cold Steel Warrior's Edge long range knife fighting system. I recommend both!
