Re: 3 times in 1 month
Pro-8's use standard frequencies so they are compatible with a lot of radios out there.
I have 4 - primarily use them for paintball (marshalling) - with clear line of sight can get 500m out of them.
In the complex i got good comms from 1 side to the other but the houses were in a square (ie. big open space in the middle)
Complexes with many houses in a row will probably not work that well as there will be too much interference.
(they also make great baby monitors - put one in "vox" mode which i slipped in the cot - both wife and i carried 1 each around to house to hear little one cry/wakeup)
If you want something more decent then look at HYT - a lot more expensive & would need custom programming but awesome radios.

Re: 3 times in 1 month
Cool just checked them out, seems like that would work great.
Now to get some of the sheepdogs to bite and maybe some of the sheep.

Re: 3 times in 1 month
I saw a while back on "a certain 4x4" forum there was a chap selling the Bosvark radio's. I looked at them too as an alternative to the R2K each Motorola's our neighbourhood watch use. They are repeater compatible as well as work on their own. I can't remember the price but they seemed reasonably priced to me, with a lot of specs (license free radio as well as can be used on licensed frequencies too). PM for more details if you like.
I use a radio with our Watch and we have a lot of success with them (radios). We have a repeater up above us and at any time 10+ radio's are online and ready to respond. At night this increases to 20+. I believe that over a 100 radios are in the neighbourhood. SAPS have two to three of the radios each day, as well as the two prominent armed response companies (1 each in their control rooms). We have single ladies with radio's as well as housewives and people that work from home. Just driving through the neighbourhood taking the kids to school serves as a patrol, and having the radio with them then can result in a preventative action being taken. During a work day a call would result in 2-4 vehicles rushing out to respond, (ladies and men). We also use Whatsapp to message each other with info as a lot of members are working outside the area but like to keep in touch with what going on and who's been spotted doing what etc.
If you can get a few people to buy in to the concept and start producing results you will get more people joining as they are hit or see the results. I am only sorry I didn't start assisting earlier.
