having work done on a knife

Hi guys,

I'm a complete knife noob.

I have a Kershaw Kudu folder. It is a hunting pocket knife.

I was wondering, what would it cost to add a "button" (what's the term) so that I can open the blade with my thumb.

Then at the back of the knife, there is a hole for a lanyard. I want a pocket clip fitted so that I can carry the knife.

Are these procedures possible?

Who is a good knife guy in Pretoria or JHB to do this?

What would costs be more or less?

Buying a knife with what you want is probably easier.

True. And my bank loyalty awards will get me a R1000 Sandton voucher, which I will go spend at Sharp Edge on a proper EDC. But I thought, hey I have the Kershaw already and the mods does have merit for hunting as well (one less thing to carry on your belt).

Ok, cool. Was just saying.

The mods you want can be done. The clip is easier than the thumb opener. The blade on the Kudu closes almost flush with the grip.

I don't know if this is a Kershaw clip or an after market one, but it is a simple case of drilling and tapping the grip and screwing on the clip.

You could relieve the grip and then drill through and bolt a.... bolt through the blade for a one handed opening stub, or you could attach a plate to the back of the blade.

That clip is exactly what I want.

I was thinking of a stud through the current finger slot in the blade. That way you have some leverage, rather than being right at the joint where you will very little leverage.

I second getting a new knife!

something with the features you want in a PROPER steel. Spyderco and Benchmade probably the only 2 "production" knives I have a high regard of.

Agree with Kayback. The mods can be done and the clip would be sensible. For hunting purposes I would rather suggest a large folder (Spyderco Resilience, CRKT M16 or M21 etc) for hunting.

My personal preference is to use a fixed blade hunting knife because a small blade is a nuisance when performing big tasks. I once cut the throat of a blue wildebeest with my EDC pocket knife (CRKT M21-02G) and that was tough. A big blade can do the job of a small blade, but not vice versa.
