Default The LM/R and Optical sights for CQB

As my idea with this thread is not a general optic related topic but rather an LM/R related topic I specifically place it here under Tactical Rifle. tup

I originally posted this on the Tactical Rifle Porn thread but I think it merits a separate thread after Ikor's post enquiring about the optic options in that thread.

    Optics on the LM!!!

If you require co-witness with the standard LM/R BUIS and cheekweld on the standard stock and you do not intend to change the KISS principle of the LM/R series of rifles, especially the 5 and 6 models, there is only one way to go = a Trijicon Mini Reflex (RMR) or Mini Red Dot mounted on the dustcover of the LM.

I experimented with this and found a mount height for the Trijicon Mini Reflex RMR that allows for perfect co-witness with the standard BUIS of the LM and using the standard stock. This does not include a picatinny/weaver rail mounted to the dustcover and then a mini dot or RMR mounted to the rail with a picatinny mount because that situates the sight to high for co-witness. Using the direct mount method of the RMR in front of the rear BUIS will require bending the charging handle to allow for unhindered use of the charging handle past the RMR/Mini Dot placed in front of the rear BUIS.

Because my LM6 is a CQB rifle for me I opted for a non co-witness solution because I want my LM as low profile as possible and that did not allow for a bent charging handle. I installed the RMR in place of the Mini Dot I had on the dustcover in the pic attached at a predetermined height which spaces the front sight ring right in the middle of the aperture of the RMR giving me a giant ghost ring effect. So if the RMR dies (which I seriously doubt that it will as it uses the same technology as the Trijicon Reflex sights) I can still utilise the aperture of the RMR and front sight ring as sights for CQB work.

I am currently developing a RMR mount with ECM Technologies for foolproof direct mounting of the RMR on a LM dustcover. This mount will ride over the dustcover like the rear iron sights on the LM and not just sit on top of the dustcover as mine is mounted currently. The idea is to provide a battle field quality mount for the battle field quality RMR on a battle field quality rifle.

The dustcover mount for the RMR will allow for mounting the RMR in front of the rear iron sight on a LM/R for BUIS co-witness and for mounting the RMR rearward in place of the rear iron sight.

The lowest picatinny rail on the LM will be one fitted to the dustcover. The second best option low height picatinny is the one I have on my LM for mounting a light - see pic 2. I have since taking the picture modified the rail by cutting it about 2cm shorter and turning it front to rear for an totally unhindered use of the standard charging handle.

Imo mounting a full size Aimpoint or Eotech will not allow for Co-Witness unless a full rail system is used and the standard front and rear iron sights of the LM/R are replaced with aftermarket BUIS. This will necessitate the use of a cheek riser or after market stock. This if for me not an option as I see the LM/R as a KISS rifle and imo it should be optical sight enhanced in a KISS method without adding any more weight than necessary on an already heavy rifle (= purely imo and compared to an AR).

This mount worked for us. Used with a RDMS or J Point it put the dot right in line.

Must search the workshop to see if I can find one. No gunsmithing, rock solid, removes with the gas tube and goes back to zero.

If you can find it, consider it sold.

    Yip tup

your mount is a very viable and very viable and possibly better option than dustcover mount for co-witness KISS mounting of an optic on the LM/R

Silver Bullet, when you find them you had better make a template because I think there might be a few more of us that would be interested in such a mount in the not too distant future grn1

So Silver Bullet, drop the paperwork and go find the sample model and start making some more - you now have 5 on order and you know me I am rather impatient and can't wait for stuff tup
