Re: Black powder canon
Let's re-cap:
To enter the BP game, you first need a BP competency. For that you go to an accredited training provider and do the training. Then you apply for the competency.
Only when you have received the competency, can you purchase a BP firearm.
Only when you have a firearm, can you apply for a BP permit.
The BP permit requires a competency and a certificate from a gunsmith stating the details of the BP firearm you own.
Do not apply for a BP certificate on the strength of either a cannon or a C&B revolver. These are currently grey areas and you'll just be hassled endlessly.
If you want to shoot BP in your (licensed) Martini Henry, you need a BP competency and a certificate from the gunsmith describing the gun in which the BP is to be used. You also need to include a cert. copy of your license for the BP cartridge gun you need the BP for.

Re: Black powder canon
Herewith a possible reason.
Let me quote from the FCA.
Prohibited firearms
4. (1) The following firearms and devices are prohibited firearms and may not be
possessed or licensed in terms of this Act, except as provided for in sections 17, 18(5),
19 and 20(1)(b):
(a) Any fully automatic firearm;
(b) any gun, cannon, recoilless gun, mortar, light mortar or launcher manufactured
to fire a rocket, grenade, self-propelled grenade, bomb or explosive
device;

Re: Black powder canon
That sounds to me like they are using the term "cannon" as something that delivers an explosive payload and not a solid projectile .
