Xtreme Steel, Long Range shooting event - 8 March 2014
Entries to the 2nd XSSSA event will open tomorrow (entry forms can then be downloaded from the website). This will be held on 8 March 2014 close to Ceres in the Western Cape. For detail and rules you can visit the website.
www.xsssa.co.za
Team entries only at R500 per team.
Only 18 teams can enter.
Shooting will be between 500m and 1300m (for now only calibers up to and including 300 WSM /WM will be allowed)
The first Match at the end of last year was a big success and we hope to build on this and spread this new activity country wide.
Xtreme Steel Shooting, is a non-standard contest that examines practical rifle skills, including target recognition, range estimation, wind doping and marksmanship. It is designed to test a competitor's rifle shooting skills in practical challenges in the natural terrain using what gear he can carry.
Regards
Arnold

Re: Xtreme Steel, Long Range shooting event - 8 March 2014
Hi Arnold. This really sounds like a great event. Could you please tell me the logic behind the range estimation bit. Surely the further out you go the more important it is to know the range you are shooting at. Even in sniper training there is a second person involved that accurately measure the distance. Should one be doing long distance hunting then it would be very important to know the distance. Is the skill not rather in the ability to handle and manage your rifle as opposed to judging the distance. The same I would say goes for measuring the strength of the wind. Very few people are accurate in judging the wind strength and that is why wind measurement tools exist.
May it then be that the "Xtreme" bit of this event is more about judging distance and wind strength than about handling the firearm. Just wondering.

Boesman, have a look at the rules on the website and it will be clear.
In essence you can use all tools you can carry. Rangefinders and weather stations are welcome and necessary to be successful (using a rangefinder is also a way of range estimation because it is not precise). Due to the ranges involved and current affordable rangefinder abilities the ranges are known at this stage. Teams of two people enter and both fulfill the role of shooter and spotter.
Shooting at that distance measuring the wind at your location is not sufficient and you have to judge the wind all the way to the target and make a wind call. The more you practice the luckier you get.
Then you also have to handle the weapon system and break the shot. If you like you can think of it as a sniper exercise.

Urabus, I remember you came down from DBN to CPT for our first FT shoot with your EV2 ;)
fivefivesix, if all goes well I hope this picks up and gets hosted across the country ... that is our aim anyway. Don't know when that will happen.
