Default Want to get my first AR rifle...

Hi all, I am very new to AR's. I have been hunting for a while and now tactical rifles really took my fancy. Is it a good idea to start my AR experience with the Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22? Can I do any sport shooting with the little .22LR AR?

    Cheers guys!

IDPA also has two classes for the .22LR.

    I got an MP15-22 because:

    - The actual firearm is cheaper.
    - The ammo is MUCH cheaper. This is the real kicker.
    - A great many of the accessories will carry over once (if) you go full calibre (stocks, grips, lights, optics etc) and you can develop what works for you and what doesn't (see following point) while shooting a lot with the different bits.
    - Regarding the point above (and this may be debatable), I had quite a few airsoft bits and pieces - the light recoiling .22 doesn't break them, so I've got to play with an Aimpoint Pro replica, an Eotech replica etc without spending real money on those things, while still getting the feel for them. Also grips panels, some Magpul PTS stuff all seems to hold up fine, given that the .22 isn't a 'serious' rifle for me. Once I settle on things, I'll get the real deal where needed. I also had an old Tasco Bantam to play with. So there is a lot of scope to play around with cheap bits.
    - You can still get excellent training, and more of it (controls are the same, just short of some recoil, although the 5.56 isn't exactly a heavy recoiling load)

That being said, there's no need to step your way up to a 5.56 - it's not a heavy kicking load: it's really all about the money, and being able to shoot four times more ammo for the same price (more if you count the price difference between the actual firearms themselves) does wonders for semi rifle beginners like I consider myself to be.

Thanks ARM505, thats what I was thinking, its cheaper to shoot than 5.56. I was going to buy a bolt action CZ 455 Varmint bull barrel .22LR, but I am leaning towards the S&W mp 15-22 now

    ammo might be cheaper, yes.
but that just means you shoot 10x the amount of ammo per range trip

be careful, it's a hungry beast.

    Congrats!

I blazed through 700 rounds without even realising it on my first range trip, then 600 the next. That was while trying to be all methodical about training properly, not just pulling the trigger a lot...it's just so much fun. True, the bigger bang of the bigger calibres is awesome, but everytime you pull the trigger your hear your wallet going 'ow ow ow ow ow' if you're not a millionaire!
