Re: Lever action for hunting?
I normally load for my .44 with 240 gr XTP to 1600 fps. They flatten any bushpig with correct placement. Never had under penetration problems, but they grow to giant saucers very quickly. A few months ago I ran out of ammo and reloading time and bought some 240 gr ammo that is semi jacketed flat point. Have not chronographed them, but have downed some Impala rams in the meantime. They do penetrate deeper than the XTP's would, but don't give the same idea of "smacking them down" like XTP's. I would be confident to use SJHP on bushpig but at this stage would still be more confident of keeping my limbs in tact with the XTP's. That said, I shoot bushpig in only 2 places: The brain or perfectly broadside heart shots. I have never needed to shoot them quartering away as a bushpig that is quartering away is already running and I don't shoot at running away pigs in the mealies.
