Best big bore calibre?

What would you guys say is the best big bore calibre for dangerous game apart from the 375.It has to be in the 4's.
416 rem,416 rigby, any of the 458's or one of the 500's?Take in consideration killing power, ammo cost and availability, recoil and shootability and also rifle manufacturers.Basically the best true-big bore all rounder!

I think you are going to get a million different opinions on this. As a guide I mostly use a .458 win mag due to ammo cost and availabilty, I recently bought myself a .458 lott for no other reason than Iv always wanted one it is a cz 550 and is plain and simple which is what I want and with a 22inch barrel it makes a great rifle to carry on walks and still has more than enough power in reserve to deal with those tight situations. My dream though is a double in. 470.

We think the same. I am busy having my 458WM converted to Lott, not because it needs to be done. But a 470 double, now you are talking. To the original question, the Lott must be very close to best all rounder big bore for you criteria.

For things that like to chew, step and sit on you, the bigger, the better. So what is available? 750 Nitro Express?

If you factor in price, portability, comfort (recoil), etc. you are compromising. But that's what we all do. So choose the biggest you can afford, carry and shoot well. And shooting it well is the most important criteria. What works for me, is not neccesarily going to work for you. I would like a 500, but I have a 375 in the safe.

If you have a magnum action, then go 458 Express. Shoots same a Lott but at lower recoil. All the other calibres is nice to have … but … 404 Jeff, Classic and lovely calibre - brass shit expensive same as 505, 500's and the rest of the big bores. It fun shooting big bores and you have to practice with it but if it's to expensive she will become a safe queen.

The 458's are fairly cheap to run, and components for ammo is everywhere. Even if you go and hunt in Africa and something happened with your ammo, you'll be more likely to get 458 than 404, 400/450 and all the other classics.
