His story was that he handed in his firearm as he believed the SAPS would take care of it and destroy it accordingly. He was however recently contacted by the SAPS to inform him that they were cleaning the office and found his .38 special in a cabinet. They wanted to know why they had possession of it as they could not find a case number linked to it.

Needless to say he realized the error of his ways and decided to licence it.

I thus do not think proper record is or was ever kept of firearms handed in.
The 10k plus refers to SAPS firearms issued to officers.

It does not take into account, and the articles do not deal with, civilian firearms handed in for destruction. That is a completely unknown factor and I predict that no-one will ever have a true reflection of actual numbers of those firearms that were stolen by SAPS employess or contractors, and put back into the system a siilegal firearms.

    Automatic weapons recovery:
During an intelligence driven operation conducted by
members of the Public Order Policing Unit two weapons
were recovered, an R4 and R5 respectively.
Brigadier Hendrik Jansen, Station Commander of Delft
SAPS commended these members and said that the
seizure eliminated the possibility that the weapons
could have been used for criminal activities.
During the seizure operation at a wendy house in Kaizer
Street, Leiden, Delft, beside the weapons, police seized
    2 X R5 magazines and 100 X 5.56mm rounds. The
weapons had its serial numbers filed off.
Police are investigation the origin of the weapons and
the suspects, both 22 years old, will face charges for
the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and
for tampering with firearms. Both suspects will appear
in the Bellville Magistrates Court soon. Brigadier Jansen
urged the public to come forward with information
should they be aware of places or persons in
possession of illegal firearms. Brig Jansen further said
that every firearm taken off the streets means lives are
saved. He also praised the members involved in the
bust for their dedication to eradicate illegal firearms.
