Default Using Vortex Crossfire 3-9x40 Dead Hold Reticle to get distace of animal

    Good day all,

I am new to hunting and I was wondering if someone would be able to help me with a formula.

According to Vortex http://www.vortexoptics.com/uploads/...dc-sfp-13a.pdf on page 9, you can use the known animal length on the highest magnification to determine the distance of the animal.

I can do the conversion from inches to cm and yards to meters, but they use the highest magnification as 18x, where my scope highest magnification is 9x.

Is there maybe another formula or rule of thumb?

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Regards

    Shaun

    Hi Shaun

If you want to know more about ranging targets(milling) with your scope and basic concepts of long range shooting check out Ryan Cleckner's videos on YouTube. He explains it well here https://m.youtube.com/watch?list=PLA...&v=S5AGsHSIsVo

Oh and they used x18 as it was most probably the highest magnification on the scope. The scope is usually only calibrated on the highest magnification so that 0.1 mil or 0.25 MOA is exact only at this magnification. Your scope should indicate at which magnification it is calibrated, most likely at x9. If it is a First Focal plane scope the values are constant throughout the magnification range.

    Easier way:
    (1) Estimate what distance your target animal is standing at
    (2) Put the appropriate BDC indicator on your target animal's vital area
    (3) Fire the shot
    (4) If the animal drops, you estimated correctly. Job done
    (5) If the animal does not drop, but runs away, you need to estimate better next time!

(all said in jest, of course....)
