As Peter points out, the 3"Express will feed and shoot 458Win Mag and Lott ammo, intermixed with 3"Exp, reliably, all day long. So, the rifle has all the best attributes of the others, and a few more.

I am priviledged to know Prof Koos Badenhorst. He has also kindly allowed me to shoot his personal 458 3" Exp rifle (a Ruger no.1), from the bench at our local shooting range. What an experience! His rifle is a pleasure to shoot, and will cut clover-leaf 3 shot groups on demand.

I have also shot a few 458Win Mags, a Lott and a few 460Wby's. IMO, the 3" Exp wins hand down. But I know that tastes do differ.

So if you need tooth-rattling recoil to re-affirm your manhood, choose whatever does that for you. My choice was easy...

I must have checked with 11 different shops and of those that had, no one had brass close to R 12.00.
Before I made the final decision I shot a number of Lott's and 2 different express's. When launching a 500g bullet at 2200 there was little to no difference in recoil. I really liked the Express but the brass was the final deciding factor for me. expensive is one thing, but when you battle to ever get it then its a whole other ball game.

Last time I checked, you could order brass directly from PMP

When I had my 458 converted to Express I bought 200 pieces of brass. Been shooting my express extensively (hunting and BASA competitions) for the last 5 years and still have 100 that I haven't even touched. This brass will still keep my children's children shooting. PM me and I'll point you in the right direction for Dies and brass.

I would've thought that Prof Badenhorst's reasoning behind the 458 Express, and the research he put into it, would be essential reading for the OP. I find it instructive that he seems not to be interested in it. It tends to support my observation that too many guys seem to want instant answers. Technical matters are not that simple.

I have to agree with you on this, when all the info you could ever want is given to you on a plate, then why not take the time to read it. his lack if interest does not make sense

    Hi Dick,

    Thanks for the literature.

The Prof makes a compelling argument in the South African context. That, combined with the ability to shoot the shorter two rounds if needed and the ease of conversion from a stock CZ/Brno .458 win mag just seems to make a lot of sense...

    www.ch4d.com

    Look for 458-3".

I have read or heard that it is possible to convert 458 Lott-dies to 458 Express. Not sure how feasible it is.

Default .450 Rigby or .458 Express

You can load 3” with win mag, Lott or Express dies.

Some of the RCBS Lott dies are in fact long enough to full length size Express case.
