A black teenage boy stepped off a curb in the US city of Detroit on April 2 - into the path of an oncoming truck.

The driver of the truck could not avoid hitting the youngster. He stopped the vehicle and rushed to the boy's side to see if he was okay. A black mob of about a dozen people descended on the white driver and beat him to within an inch of his life.


Hearing the commotion, a black woman rushed to tend to the boy, who was not badly hurt, and then threw her body protectively over the white driver lying in the road. The driver, who went into a coma, would take a while to recover. The woman, carrying a .38 with the intention of using it if anyone dared beat him further, saved his life.


People in the neighbourhood talked about the game of "chicken" often played on the rough streets on the east side of this city. It involves youngsters jumping in front of oncoming vehicles and leaping back onto the curb at the last minute. There was a long silence from black community activists even after charges of "ethnic intimidation" were brought against members of that mob.


"Somebody had to stand up," said Deborah Hughes, the off-duty black nurse who saved the life of Steve Utash that day.

An older black woman took care of my (white) brother when he got lost in New York and ended up near Harlem. Her comment was something like "I'll just see that you make it to the next train station. It is not good for you to be alone in these streets."

TIA. I don't think it would have ended the same way in SA. However, I applaud this woman for what she did. A true selfless act
