    Default Out the box treatment.

    Good day Gunsiters

I have an M&P15, but waiting (painfully) for the licence. I have a new Magpul stock, BUIS, pistol grip and mags safely tucked away. Planning on a Vortex SPARC II.

Now what is recommended when first preparing your AR for the range? Degreasing the bolt face, etc?

What lube is recommended? I've read that new ARs need to be run wet.

Any other considerations to take into account?

Planning on using S&B and getting some bulk Indian or Norinco ammo.

    Much obliged

    Paddy

Do this. I typically recommend that new rifles get field stripped, cleaned and generously lubricated. I recommend that the Bolt Carrier Group, Charging Handle, and Inside of the Upper receive an ample amount of lubrication. Keep the rifle well lubricated and allow the oil to condition the metal components. So, yes, strip the rifle, remove the bolt carrier, bolt, firing pin. Remove the extractor too, if you want, but it's fiddly to put back as it's under quite a bit of tension. Don't lose the spring or insert. Remove the buffer and spring, you can wipe that down and lightly lube it to. Clean the barrel and chamber. Reassemble. Use Slip2000 or Fireclean.

I really don't think AR's should be run Wet.

Maybe some of the more experienced AR guys can chime in here, but on my PWS (which is a piston gun) the manufacturer recommends only a drop of oil on the four points of the BCG that make contact with the inside of the receiver.

    7:50 onwards for lubrication.

You can run a piston a lot "drier" than a DI gun (according to what I have read at least), but a DI needs to be wet.

There is no doubting the overwhelming evidence that DI AR's should be run wet, and I'm betting that piston AR's also need more than four drops, at least for any sort of lengthy range sessions.

+1. Although it isn't an AR, I run my FAL very wet and it seems to prefer it that way...piston or no piston. I wouldn't take a chance under lubricating a gun...I don't know enough of what I am doing to try that.

I run my two AR's wet and use Breakfree CLP.
