Fake Spyderco knives

First of all I am not posting this to cry about buying a fake knife, I should have known better!

It's more of a warning to other potential buyers not to support these crooks.

So I see this auction on BidorBuy for a Spyderco Dragonfly 2 H1 starting at the usual R1 with R50 increments. I also look at the seller's ratings which are very good. I see he is selling the same knife in the "Buy Now" category for R950. I have done some research and see that this is slightly below the RRP of around R1,100, but not far below it.

Anyway, I win the auction and receive the knife a few days later. Immediately after opening it I notice that it is not the real thing. The colour of the handle is not the same bright yellow as in the pics on the ad and the build quality is terrible. Very similar to this guy's situation:

So I email the seller asking him to confirm that the knife is genuine. He replies that as per the ad the origin of the knife is China

Then I reply to him saying that even the original Spyderco knifes are made in China and saying that the origin is China does not indicate to me that the knife is fake. He then responds that if I am not happy with the knife I can return it for a refund!

Now my problem is not paying R300 for a fake knife (I always had the suspicion that it might be), it's the fact that it was advertised as the real thing and only after I complained they changed their tune. How many other people paid R950 for a fake, thinking because of the price it must be the real thing.

I see this morning they changed the description to include "Replica" and changed the "Buy Now" option to R650.

Do a search, they had a huge debate over grey / fake Spyderco's, Paul discussed everything from a suppliers point of view.

I was duped a couple of months ago into winning a SOG ax from bid or buy(was also a fake), never again.

This is why I do not purchase this online, too many fake product out there. I recall a thread on fake Eotech RDS's as well, it was quite hard to spot the fake from the original.


I'm also pretty sure the sellers on b.o.b have fake profile to up their biddings as well.

Yeah it sucks.

Sadly all SOG knives on there is fake. I look at a SOG brand knife on BidOrBuy and can't even find that same looking knife anywhere on SOG's website or catalogue haha

I would report BoysToys though on BidOrBuy.

They have other models there advertised as the real deal and then some other Spydercos advertised as replicas. Can't we report them somewhere or to Spyderco SA agents for false advertising, using the Spyderco logo on grey products knowingly?

Only they are shit expensive.

With regards to online shops, if you buy from a proper place you won't be burned. iWarehouse and TAKEALOT come to mind. I do believe that as far as pricing on Spyderco is involved, Tac Shac is best though. So good in fact that they don't advertise prices as it's below their allowed advertising price!

Same goes for the Benchmades on there, if it looks too good to be true it usually is. Luckily I got it for dirt cheap and sold it on for the same price after fair disclosure.

used knifecenter a few time without any issues in getting the items to SA, would reccomend registering as they have some very gooed specials every now and again.

Your Purchased Item, sale will have the original advertisement wording, they cannot change that, so I would forward the info to the powers that be, to many people trying to make a quick buck.
