It is the head stamp on the case, I am not sure on the 5.56 I think it just has a year stamp and a batch stamp.

The headstamp will typically be "85" and "13". 85 indicates year of manufacture, being 1985. 13 is the powder type. This is B556, which is the same thing as S321.

Incidentally, I have bought some of this ammo at a local gun shop a while back. Kept a few packs, complete with price label and the invoice, just to have it.

Just today somebody in the USA was enquiring on a reloading group about the same ammo and cases. They were exported to and sold to civillians there too.

There is no such thing as "military ammo". PMP makes various types of ammo for the 223/5,56 and sells them to various entities, including the SANDF, SAPS, wholesalers and retailers. While the SANDF uses mostly one particular type, this does not give them any say over ammo sold to others.

I was today days old when I learned this. Thanks.

100%. Typically PMP retails all the 'batch overruns' (or if an order is cancelled or rejected by the customer). If the SANDF orders a million rounds of 5.56 PMP will make (say) 1.2 million to account for quality control rejects, etc. If they only reject 100 000 rounds on QA the other 100 000 will be sold retail or exported.

The only guys who have an agreement with PMP to NOT allow their ammo to be sold off is SAPS and JMPD as far as I know (may be others).

I was sure all SA Milsurp was 5,56, you say he was carrying .223 Milsurp?

I've seen a couple of PMP cases marked .223 which were Berdan primed.

    Who knows?
