Training via Airsoft
given the cost of ammo etc, this really makes a lot of sense to me.
do any of you guys do this already and if so how do you find it benefits you?

Re: Training via Airsoft
it's all about the mindset and tactics. whether it's plastic pellets or simunitions.
i would LOVE an airsoft force-on-force course from a proper/real instructor.

Re: Training via Airsoft
One day when I am big I want to be an Airsoft Operator.
My son shoots me with airsoft and I return fire with a SIRT... helps me realize I am slow off the X, slow to draw, need to be moving and shooting and moving to cover, etc. My son has a huge amount of fun too showing off his marksmanship skills and boasting of all the little spots where I am bleeding/bruised (I bleed easy).
Once he gets bigger we will run airsoft both ways, MUHAHAHA :)
Like Grossman said "the pain is GOOD"... although in that case he was talking about simunitions which would be a whole lot more fun and more pain, and the neighbours might get antsy.
In the MDW vehicle fighting course this last weekend the paintball drills REALLY ramped up the intensity of movement in the search for cover/concealment. Getting out of the driver seat kill zone and drawing and exiting the vehicle are all kind of "okay" until some maniac with a paintball gun is trying to mark you...
So I think airsoft is excellent, great for movement. I don't do it enough, but I think its very helpful as long as you go with Travis's "don't do anything with an airsoft that you wouldn't do with a real gun".

Re: Training via Airsoft
My experience practising / training with airsoft is mixed. Works well for teaching new people (esp kids or ladies who are afraid of the recoil) and for doing things that have a bit of distance e.g. clearing corners with someone shooting back.
But the gas operated guns jam very easily. Even a tiny amount of dirt or debris in the action will cause pistols to fail, magazines to discharge all their gas, etc. For force-on-force it's a good tool but it gets frustrating if you spend half your time trying to keep the gear functioning.
