Shot farmer fires back, kills attacker

    2014-07-07 12:49

Bloemfontein - A farmer is in hospital after he was attacked and shot on his
farm near Reitz, Free State police said on Monday.

"Three armed men accosted him on his farm on Saturday afternoon. He was shot
in the stomach and in one arm," Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said.

The farmer managed to shoot one of his attackers, who died on the scene.

The other two fled on foot, Mophiring said.

"A case of murder and attempted murder has been opened," he said.

The farmer was recovering in hospital.

Nothing was taken from the house and no arrests had been made.

The only one who died as per the article is the one shot by the farmer. So the murder case would be against the farmer. As I understand it this is normal procedure, even in cases of clear self defence, though?

It should not be the norm the norm should be to open a forensic death investigation if it is clear that the person defended himself and if found he /she exceeded the boundaries then a murder inquest is opened.

That is how it was always done until it became easier to charge the defender, the defenders should more and more institute civil claims for wrong full procession.

It is standard procedure to open a murder doc after a killing. It gets closed once they have all the facts. He is not being arrested though.

Good! It would appear as if the farmers are slowly becoming hard targets. I hope this brave gentleman makes a full recovery He is an Yster!

I also hope that his preparedness serves as an example for anyone in the rural and farming community who has not armed themselves, or who don't keep their guns ready.
