Advice Rangefinder
Hi
I am looking for a reasonably priced rangefinder to use for plains game.
I wont be taking shots out to further than 350-400m. Maybe gongs or targets out to a bit further Has anyone got any suggestions on which rangefinder would be best to get.
In South African hunting conditions is it necessary to get a rangefinder with angle compensation?
Regards
Gary

Re: Advice Rangefinder
I just got a Nikko Sterling range finder.
Little bit bigger than the rest but under R2k and worth the money.

Re: Advice Rangefinder
Best you can afford... Just in case you want to go further as time passes... If it gas good glass, it can double as your binos in the veld.

Re: Advice Rangefinder
I use a Nikon 550 Rifleman, but even the Prostaff 550 should work fine up to 500m. Used it for a bit now and very happy.

Re: Advice Rangefinder
Dont skimp on a rangefinder, like a scope, the budge tones will do ie 2.5k but if you want a good one get one thats rated to 1000yards and a good brand
Due to the veld when hunting, its often difficult to range springbok with my Nikon Prostaff 550 because of the high grass

Re: Advice Rangefinder
I've been told that you can half the effective distance that it is rated for. Reason being that rating assumes perfect reflectivity of target.
So even if it's rated for 500m, it is so under ideal conditions, ranging something the size of the Space Shuttle.
It won't cut the mustard aiming at a springbok standing at 467m.

Re: Advice Rangefinder
I've ranged with Nikon 550 Rifleman on springbok up to 350-400m, as with any optic device it is about the steadiness of the operator :-). The further the distance the more it becomes apparent even more so with the bigger and heavier units.

Re: Advice Rangefinder
I had a leopold (I think 600), they said up to 550yards but you will not range further than 235 on a springbok. Close my eyes and bought a leica 1600B. Fantastic. Range a small tree at 1350 yards.
