Shooting in residential area
Hi guys
I live in a complex in kempton park and was wondering if it is legal or illegal for me to do some target shooting in my back yard given that I don't endanger anyone?
Any advice would be appreciated!

Re: Shooting in residential area
You're not allowed to shoot with a pellet rifle or any firearm in a built-up area, with the exception being the range.

Paintball guns should be fine though? Just don't go shooting pepper balls or solids

Re: Shooting in residential area
I just opened, read and thought, did you not do your competency. Then I saw the thread is under the paintball section,
Japes what do you want to shoot, but also you are not allowed to shoot any weapon, even paintball or pellets in a build up section

Re: Shooting in residential area
Firearm Control Act 60/2000
Definitions:
ii. "Air gun" means any device manufactured to discharge a bullet or any other projectile of a caliber of less than 5.6mm (.22 caliber), by means of compressed gas and not by means of burning propellant.
Chapter 16
(6) It is an offense to point -
(a) Any firearm, an antique firearm or an air gun, whether or not it is loaded or capable of being discharged at any other person, without good reason to do so; or
(b) Anything which is likely to lead a person to believe that it is a firearm, an antique firearm or an air gun at any other person, without good reason to do so;
(7) It is an offense to discharge a firearm, an antique firearm or an air gun in a built up area or any public place, without a good reason to do so;
Paintball guns - my opinion would be that they don't fall under the definition of "Air gun" because of the bullet size (larger than 5.6mm). I wonder why the 5.6mm distinction, though?
@Japes - don't take it personally. This is a forum, and forums always have someone on who hasn't had time to take a cup of coffee. That said - do yourself a favour and read carefully through the law part of your competency docs.
*Edit: Reply to Boerboel. I thought the same, but he recently got a competency for a hunting rifle. :P
