    Default Tips on warthog?

I have been invited to get rid of a big warthog boar which has been raiding young wheat under a "spilpunt". We start at 8:00 tomorrow morning because the pigs only show some time after sunrise. I'll be taking my .308 with 130gr Impala bullets.

    Any tips?

They have a good sense of smell (watch the wind direction) and their hearing is good (be quiet). Their eyesight is not that good but they are not blind either, if it looks at you freeze. They are generally not difficult to stalk, although you will probably be ambushing it.

As to your choice of caliber it is good. As to the Impala bullets, try to hit the heart or both lungs or even better the heart and both lungs.

Enjoy the hunt, have fun :)

Skiet raak, en maak seker jy weet where to place the bullet if the pig is looking straight toward you. You might be temped to pop one between the eyes, but it's a fraction too low and you may miss the brain. Draw a cross between the eyes and ears (left eye to right ear, right eye to left ear). Where the cross is, there you shoot.

Also, they are tough buggers for their size with a strong will to live - do not be surprised if they run a few paces even with a good shot.

Don't get to close to the tusks until you are 100% certain it is done. That hog will cut you deeper than a skilled surgeon with a blunt scalpel, faster than you can say jigaboo.

    +1 ady

My brother in law wrestled with a wounded warthog once. He lost a finger for it.

My last one ran about 30m also after a perfect shot with a Impala 130gr bullet.

Also, warthog with a good shot like to "spin" like a top and scream bloody murder. Steer clear and don't make yourself seen until it quiets down.
