The point of twitter is to customise your inflow of information from people/sources you are interested in (without an obligation on their part to follow you back). In contrast to Facebook where you can't be friends with your "friends" and not listen to them whine all day...

Go to your friends profile and just click unfollow...

That way you remind friends with them, so you can see their profile but you dont get the updates on your news feed
