Quite a few people regularly shopping or working at CW phoning in to radio station saying that only visible policing at malls will stop this make them feels. Extra secuirty guards do not mean anything since the policeman HAVE GUNS.

Seeing this as a blessing in disguise a lot of non-FA people realizing that fire can only be stop fire; think these people are only on small step away from being convinced that a legal competent EDC guy next to you is just as good if not better than a SAPS official.

They are hitting all manner of stors, only the mall robberies are making the headlines at the big news outlets.

This month they've hit the Jet in Bellville CBD as well.

Just saw it on the Cape Talk page:
"A third robbery in just over a week has taken place at Canal Walk shopping centre, this time robbers held up a Cardies store where at least two men ushered staff to the back and taking an undisclosed amount of cash. There have been robberies at a number of Cape Town's malls, and many are asking if security measures have been adequately bolstered.
Michael Broughton is the Director at the Institute of Retail Risk, and he says that having more armed guards is not the solution, as it would increase the risk of a shoot-out, and put staff and shoppers at risk."

Looks to me that the malls went into full head in the sand mode.

No reports on their social media pages, no reports going out to media, no action to stop future robberies. In fact the only response I heard they do not want armed guards or firearms on site because they are afraid of getting sued.

I have a close friend who is the Ops Manager for a large regional shopping mall belonging to one of the large development groups.

They are on high alert and have all security staff on lookout. What they do is identify suspects and follow them via the CCTV from ops room and the guards stay a distance back. They havr done random searches before on these suspects after one went into a Browns jeweller.

SOP is to relay info to SAPS and not get involved at all. I agree armed guards in a mall is a kak idea unless they are very highly trained and we know that wont happen. He asked me what I think knowing I secretly carry at his workplace even though Im not allowed to. I said its simple, if it a case of wallets and cellphones cash they can have it i dont think a gunfight in a store is worth some cash facing 5 guys. BUT if they start moving people, making us lie down, takes us back etc etc etc.....its go time. Basically gray man until its no longer possible.
