Pitch, pay, make sure you know proper range safety and ettiquette, find a squad with an RO, ask nicely to join, and go see how badly you actually suck

Gear would be gun, a proper strong side-ish holster that allows one handed reholstering, and 5 mags. Less can work but may irritate fellow shooters.

Yeah, if you are a novice take 400 rounds and leave with a much lighter range bag.
