Re: Northern Farms snake sighting - cycling
Definitely a tail and agree snakes can't lift their tails up like that so would also go with likkewaan the spots or markings on the tail and shape would also suggest likkewaan

Re: Northern Farms snake sighting - cycling
Jip I would go with a Nile Monitor Lizard very thin and sleek tail as depicted in the second picture of the actual Monitor.
Snakes do not flick the non-business end, their business end is the mouth but Monitors definitely do use the tail which can deliver a rather sharp rap.One too many wasted sunsets and one too many for the road .........

Re: Northern Farms snake sighting - cycling
You get a Rock Monitor Lizard which has a shorter and less sleek tail. The Nile Monitor Lizard on the other hand has a proportionately longer and more slender tail as shown below. Both are often referred to as a Likkewaan when they are rather different in head and body shape. I believe this is the "Mfesi" tail seen by the cyclist.

Thanks all!
I'll go with the majority vote - monitor lizard. The "snake" she saw sailing away was probably the tail with the rest of the lizard hidden in the long grass.

Re: Northern Farms snake sighting - cycling
What about the curled up snake thingy then? Lizard's testes? :P
Nah I bow to your superior knowledge. Monitor lizards are fun as can be in nature. VERY fast for something that looks so "lomp".
