My EDC knife suggestion

Hey guys

I'm looking (I see I'm not the only one) for an EDC knife.
I've got a budget for it of say R1100 (I'd need good justification to go higher).
I don't cut cardboard with my knives (my Leatherman told me why a few years ago).
Basically something useful for odds and ends, but sharp enough to cut the DNA off my biltong when so required.

I don't know much about knives but am aware of the "easy to sharpen but easy to wear" vs "difficult to sharpen but keeps its edge" factor.

I suppose a folder would be a better choice for me than a fixed blade. I cannot comment on whether I want a serrated+smooth edge compared to just a smooth edge. My Leatherman has both so I'd guess I'd prefer both rather than just a smooth edge.

Then lastly the knife should be easy to come buy.

Your suggestions would be most appreciated.

Hi knoffel,

I have two EDC knives i swap between. CRKT Pazoda- jagged blade and Leatherman - folding - not multi tool.

Both i got for under R300 each, and serve my purpose.

At that sort of price I would look for something with a 154cm blade. You may have to throw a couple hundred bucks extra at it, but it will be worth it.

At that price you can get a spyderco lil matriarch.
If you don't like it CRKT offers some great knives at awesome prices.

I got a Benchmade Griptilian from Sharp Edge in Sandton, which I EDC and use as a utility knife.

I saw a very nice Spyderco Endura 4 wave at TacShac the other day-almost within your budget. I carry the Delica wave(smaller than the endura) and I could'nt be more impressed with that little blade.

Eventhough I hate most Spyderco knives, this is good advice.

I would always suggest an Emerson for EDC because of quality and of course the wave (one of my all time favourite EDC knives is a CQC-15), but that's at least twice your budget.
With the Endura you get the Emerson wave, VG-10 blade that takes a mean edge and tip up or down left or right carry.

Good value for the money.

Subconsciously I cannot get comfortable with a liner lock in a defensive blade. I admit that I have never heard of it happening, but I am scared to death of the lock disengaging while you are working the blade hard, due to some sort of torque applied, and the blade closing on my fingers.

So for a folder I prefer a lock back, but in truth I prefer a fixed blade.

I have heard this concern before.
That Emerson is the only liner lock I own. You really have to abuse it before the liner will give way, it requires more stress than you can apply with your hands (as in a defensive role) to fail.

I prefer frame locks, but I trust my Emerson to not fail with "normal" use.
