KwaZulu-Natal police are investigating three counts of murder after three matric learners stabbed each other to death during the Pens Down Festival at Richards Bay beach on the province's north coast.

The youngsters allegedly had a quarrel which led to a fight. Police spokesperson Jay Naicker explains that three of the kids were stabbed and died due to their injuries, the victims are aged between 18 and 23. Richards Bay police are investigating three counts of murder.

Naicker has also called on the organisers of such events to ensure they are alcohol and drug free. “We just want to warn parents that allow their kids to attend such functions to make sure that these functions are well organised to ensure that there is proper security.”

The department of Education echoed this call, saying that organisers of such events need to ensure adequate security. Education MEC's spokesperson, Muzi Mahlambi said he was aware of other festivals still continuing throughout the week and is calling on organisers to be very strict in terms of their tight security and desist from selling alcohol.

Mahlambi has also appealed to matriculants to behave responsibly as other festivals continue.

The names of the learners will only be released after their next-of-kin have been informed.
