Application for Competency and Licence at the same time...

Went to the local DFO ready to apply for both at once...All excited until I chatted to the DFO and the guy next door who processes them (nice guy, being honest). He and she said it's pointless applying for both as the competency is a prerequisite to the license. They both said the license application will just sit there for ~3 months until the proficiency gets approved. Only then will anything happen with the license application. He actually said I would probably be wasting my R140 as my application would probably be misplaced in the time it just sits there waiting for the competency. He said he was happy to process it, if I'm happy risking the R140. Going to try the DFO where I work, see if they sing a different tune. A few people including "Legally Armed" said I should submit both at once.

It is best to submit both at the same time.....just tell them you spoke to someone at PTA CFR and they said they must be done together.

The DFO close to work will send you back to your DFO close to your house.

I hope you have your safe ready for inspection.

I did both at the same time - took me 3 months for both to go through. My DFO is on the ball and had no problem accepting both at the same time. Apparently the actual license app sits until the Competency is approved then goes into motion.

I submitted both at the same time and the process - competency approval and license approval, was all done in 89 days.

Same time. Mention in your FA app you're applying for Competency as well, then they will "catch up" if they get separated.

Sent mine same time. Dfo actually sent me home to change my licence application and add some motivational pictures. I asked well submit the comp so long. She then said best at same time as then once comp approved the licence is already there.

Does CFR shut shop for the holidays?

My DFO told me rather not to do it, when someone grabs your license app and try to work on it and see that you don't have a competency they just scrap it.
Remember this is SA, we got lucky by sending both in at the same time.

Please share what new toys you are applying for.
I think they only get a week holiday the week of Christmas.

My DFO told me to hand in both. According to their system my Competency has not been approved yet, however, I have received an sms stating that they have started with my firearm licence.

I also read somewhere else on this site, that someone's firearm licence was approved before their competency ?!

As always depends on who's working on your application, whether they are in a good mood, and whether they have had their coffee.
