Re: Guns are not the problem everyone thinks they are...
So 0.17% of deaths in SA are firearm related, of those, how many were SD and cop shootings. I wonder if suicides were also included.
Soooo much money and effort going into FCA and administration for a retardadly small % of deaths... boggles the mind!

Re: Guns are not the problem everyone thinks they are...
No, the 10% figure is for ALL non-natural deaths, going by the quoted article above. Of that 10%, the majority are accidental deaths (probably car accidents etc.)
So that means that only a small portion of the 10% non-natural deaths, are in fact assault related deaths. Let's call that 4% of all deaths, since I don't see the actual number above, and it is presumably less than half of all non-natural deaths, which in itself only makes up 10% of all deaths.
That would mean that firearms then cause 1.7% of the 4% assault related deaths. Meaning 0.068% of total deaths. Which equals a mere 311 deaths, by my calculation.
Clearly something is wrong with the stats above, as I am sure there are more firearm related deaths than that, annually.
EDITED TO ADD
Suicides seem to be indicated separately though, as would accidental death by firearm, or any lawful shooting, I take it, as I presume those would not be categorized as "Assault Related" deaths.

Re: Guns are not the problem everyone thinks they are...
Most interesting bit of data for me is the ratio of sharp object deaths to shooting deaths. For every person shot to death, fifty (that's right, fifty) are stabbed to death. That should tell even the casual observer that we have a social problem as opposed to a gun problem.
One needs to remember too that the shootings would include lawful homicides by police, security companies and so forth whereas stabbings would almost certainly include none or very,* very few of the same.Quemadmodum gladius neminem occidit: occidentis telum est.

Re: Guns are not the problem everyone thinks they are...
I suppose all sorts of obvious figures jump out at you when you read things like this, but I'll just highlight one: Unlawful shooting by licensed semi-automatic rifle in private hands is probably about (statistically) zero. Big fat nothing. And all the proposed difficulties involved in future licensing are a total waste of effort/money/time. It's already simply not a problem whatsoever. The EBL (evil black rifle) is just so scary that more must be done though apparently....

Government's concerns about SLRs has very little if anything, to do with its concerns about crime.

I actually called it a 'political' thing before I edited my post, yeah, it's pretty obvious I suppose. Still dumb. But I suppose we know that....

WZ, will all these stats and figures be used in the attempts to alter the FCA by the various associations?
