Robber breaks woman's face with sewing machine

Pretoria - A robber hit a woman's face with her sewing machine so badly that she broke her cheekbone, jaw, nose and brow, and has had to have surgery to have her face rebuilt.

Netwerk24's George Germishuys reported on Tuesday that Annette Heunis, 58, was attacked in her Rietfontein, Pretoria, on Friday morning.

She and one of her daughters, Nadia Heunis, 34, woke up to hear dogs barking and noises outside the house.

According to another daughter, Lizaan Mong, there was a man at the front door. He asked them to open the door and when her mother refused, he threw a garden chair through the window.

He punched Annette in the left eye, and then picked up her sewing machine and started hitting her in the face with it.

Nadia rushed to her room to fetch her cellphone and baseball bat. She wrestled with the intruder but he managed to grab the bat and hit her with it. She lost consciousness and sustained severe head injuries.

Their screams woke their gardener, who lives on the property. He fired a shot and the man fled with just Nadia's cellphone.

According to Mong, Annette is still in the intensive care unit of the Eugene Marais Hospital. She has had reconstructive surgery and still has no vision in her left eye due to severe bleeding. Doctors are reportedly worried they may not be able to save her eye.

A police spokesperson said the matter is being investigated, and no arrests have been made.

Tragically she found out that a baseball bat's effectiveness is directly proportional to the skill and strength of the person wielding it.
