If the wrong officer catches you with more than 25 rounds you can get into trouble, because WHERE did you get the extra ammo? (That is neither issued to you or that you cannot show a licence for)

Unless you own a licenced 9mm. Then you just buy what you want / need (or in my case load as many, as hot as you want)

Unfortunately for the average station cop (unless they are willing to get into trouble and know someone who can "lend" them a few extra) this is their reality.

At units like Highway Patrol / Intervention / Flying squad the situation may be different but I suspect not by much.

And that is why one NEVER takes advice about guns or their use from a cop. Especially if their only exposure to guns is the gun they are forced to carry, or if they are college instructors. trust me...

No I don't. But would you trust the average cop to give advice on the use or purchase of a gun for SD / EDC? or would you trust the guy who tells you to not trust such advice? even if he says "trust me, I know what I'm talking about?"

SAPS procurement is famously bad. And has been since the beginning of time.

The same mindset that ordered RAP401's for detectives and females resulted in this holster designs purchase. And the purchase of makeup brushes instead of squirrel hair fingerprint brushes.

I guy I know who makes gear sold a bunch of rifle slings to the police. R150ks worth. They eventually refused to pay for them, without returning them, because they claimed that they failed.

As it turns out the slings did fail. When they tied a bunch together to fashion a towing strap to pull a police van out of a ditch.

OK, you taught me something new today. Squirrel hair brushes. What the heck, that's super interesting. I see that is the gold standard for fingerprint brushes. Squirrel hair.... Never knew this was a thing.

I hope your mate took saps to court. I hear most government departments try those tricks. I heard of a guy that had to liquidate because the dept of health decided that payment was only due in 180 days, instead of 60 days. Screwed his cash flow. I've heard of people Tha strictly do COD with governmental departments for this reason. You see how quick they can arrange payment when they are refused delivery.

Those who can afford to and understand the consequences of using shitty equipment make a plan to get stuff that works.
Understanding the consequences comes from either first hand experience or good training... so that excludes most members.
Being able to afford... That also excludes most members.

Only thing "issued" on my belt was my gun. Everything else including the belt and the stuff inside the gun and mags was private purchase. Never got issues. But I held down three extra jobs to afford all the cool stuff.

That's a really sad state of affairs, fark me.

Reading your other comments about 25 rounds is also depressing as heck.

Equipping your police force like that and paying them peanuts is a disgrace.

Especially with our crime rates and the violent nature of them.

I remember those days ..... very fondly i must add. But lucky for me i worked in a few specialised units so that 25 rounds didnt apply as we carried 3 or 4 spare mags with us when we went out hunting ...... shit getting goose bumps thinking back ..
