    Default Sand snake.

I came across this little fellow sunning himself in the middle of a dirt road yesterday. I think that it is a Karoo sand snake.

As far as I know they are not venomous. However, I am hardly an expert on snakes.

The sand snakes do look a lot alike. According to photos in Johan Marais's "A complete guide to snakes in Southern Africa" the closest resemblance is the Kalahari sand snake. Your close up of the head makes for good identification.

Thanks, I think I should get myself a good book on South African reptiles.
