Gert, I love the tonteldoos, flint and striker. I have a similar one made from an old .303 brass oiler bottle. I removed the "spoon" (it just pulls out with a bit of effort) but cheated on the tinder by stuffing the bottle with cotton string and pouring in some meths in. Took a piece of thin brass rod with a hook on one end and use it to pull the string to the mouth of the bottle. The brass rod stores hook up in the bottle. One could simply store some charcloth in the bottle but the string/meths route gives you instant flame.

    The bread baking procedures...

You need a recipe to start with...the mixing of ingredients...

Leave the bread mix to rise....

Dig a hole in a river bank...

Take the Tonteldoos and start a fire:

Use horse manure in compacted ball form ...it is the best material to use as tinder/fire starting material...

    Removing the coals....

Put the bread into the oven and seal it with clay..

An hour later, sniff the cracks to see if the bread is baked...

Open the oven...take out the bread...

    A proud baker....

Since the "Tonteldoos " is a large part of this adventure..I think it appropriate to point out that Herman Nel, is making these items from scratch...

If anybody is interested to purchase such a Tonteldoos from Herman Nel I will be willing to re-lay the request to Herman Nel...he does not have internet access every day....

Maybe a little bit unorthodox but we even had a "long drop" on site...it really was a view second to non...at night we were entertained with Impala rams fighting each other while looking up at the stars from the "long drop seat"....

A view second to non day and night....

While visiting an interesting site on the farm where somebody cut rock with a make-shift saw for some other purpose unknown to us we stumbled upon a fres leopard kill, just a few paces from the site....

Here just at the back of the stone cut works we found the fresh kill.....
