Red dot sight on a hunting rifle?
Just had an idea: is a red dot sight accurate enough for a hunting rifle? Reasons I ask: it is light, small and has fast acquisition. Could this work?

Re: Red dot sight on a hunting rifle?
Paging Bushboy... IIRC they're using red dots on the guides' rifles at their lodge?

I've shot two Impala with Bushnell TRS 25s, one on a 357 rollie and the other on a 357 lever gun. 100% for bushveld use. But, a 3x scope is better. Especially if you need to take follow up shots at longer distances.

Sounds good so far. Short distance pleasure.

Re: Red dot sight on a hunting rifle?
My dad hunted in the bushveld with a red-dot on his .243 Brno for years. In those days the Tasco red dot used ambient light to produce the dot, no batteries.
Target aqcuisition is very fast and you can easily shoot with two eyes open. For anything up to 100M and beyond for those with good eyes and a sight with a 3MOA dot a red-dot will be hard to beat in terms of speed.

Check the youtube clip on the Aimpoint hunter, youll be surprised at the "reach" you can have with it. I am fittibg one on my Winchester .308 featherweight.

Re: Red dot sight on a hunting rifle?
If I recall, the size of the dot on the Nikon Red Dot sight I had on my 15-22, when it was at its finest setting, was 2 moa big. In the daylight I couldn't see it. 8 moa was visible though, but I wouldn't take an 8 moa chance on a buck at a hundred meters. If you hunt at say 50 meters or less, I suppose it could work. I can see it being very useful for guides or short range back up shots when guiding on dangerous game etcetera, but for me it isn't precise enough.

Re: Red dot sight on a hunting rifle?
Maybe a 3x or 4x Magnifier that one could clip on with a quick detachable mount could be an option for the longer shots. I know speed is the object here.
Otherwise a flipover mount but then one is carrying that weight on the gun again.
