Default EL Farmer fights off attackers

Malcolm Rudolph, 66, who managed to fight off one of the robbers and fire 10 gunshots as they fled the scene said if it was not for his “strong fighting spirit” he and his wife, Mandy, 48, would be dead.

Their farm, Lands End, is situated at Cove Ridge outside East London.

Speaking to the Dispatch yesterday about the ordeal which lasted an hour, Rudolph said that around 4.30pm on June 7 four men walked into the piggery where he and three of his employees were working saying they wanted to buy a pig.

“As I showed them the pigs I heard one of them saying ‘hit him’ in Xhosa.
“They pistol whipped me on the face and jumped on me and pulled my jacket over my face.
“They then tied our hands and feet and gagged us with rope and tape,” said Rudolph.

Three of the men then proceeded to the house where Mandy was working in the garden. One of the armed men pointed a firearm at her and pushed her into the house.

“They made me lie down on the floor and asked for the safe keys. When I told them that I don’t have keys they phoned the guy at the piggery telling him to bring my husband to the house,” said Mandy.
Rudolph said he was dragged face down from the piggery and was loaded into his truck which the suspect drove to his house, about 800m away.

“When I got inside they took me to the safe and demanded the code. I told them it was saved on my cellphone.
“At this point I started messing with them by giving them the wrong unlock code for the phone. They untied my hands so that I can put in the code.

“They opened the jewellery safe using a pick-axe and forgot to tie my hands. They took all the jewellery inside the safe and loaded all our valuable items into their getaway car and my wife’s car.”

When he was left with one guy, Rudolph took the opportunity to fight.

“He told me he was going to kill me and he hit me with an axe on my ribs and aimed for my head. I managed to shield my face with my left hand and I got up and pushed him across the room and pinned him against the wall. I managed to push him out of the room and locked the door.”

Rudolph said he got his 9mm firearm and fired 10 shots towards one robber who was inside his wife’s car.

“I shot him and he rolled out of the car and got into the getaway vehicle and they fled.”

Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Mtati Tana said a case of robbery was opened.

“Police are still investing and no arrests have been made yet,” said Tana.

Seems as if the farmers pistol was not in his safe.
He fought back and at least one is bleeding. Not too bad.

. No "aggravated assault" or "attempted murder" perhaps? Well done. That does take some balls.

I am quite familiar with that part of the world. Scary. There have been very few farm attacks there to date, as far as I am aware. Well done to the farmer for defending himself.

Wonder if the robber is going to turn up at some hospital emergency room.

I know him through my father, we got to the farm just after the attack, he took one hell of a beating but he is a tough SOB, he did everything to keep the BG's occupied and keep his wife safe, her car however did not come off as lightly.

Good on you Sir! There have been a number of stories lately where the older gents have stood their ground. Much respect. Lots for us young ones to learn from these gents.

Why would the morgue van take him there? *wishful thinking*

Erebus, please tell Mr. Rudolph about the respect and good wishes he's getting from the gunsiters. It takes real courage to take on a guy with an axe, with armed friends close by, in order to protect your wife and not be a victim. Good job sir!
