Default Brutal attack on PE student

Young man in a coma in hospital after cricket-bat beating in Summerstrand
ASTUDENT at NMMU is fighting for his life after being savagely beaten with a cricket bat and left for dead inside his flat during a suspected early morning robbery at the weekend.
Second-year computer science and applied mathematics student Asadullah Ajimudin, 19, who is originally from Kimberley and lives in a flatlet in Ben Viljoen Street, Summerstrand, has been in a coma since the attack at 4am on Saturday.
He is being treated at St George’s Hospital.
The ruthless attack has left friends and family reeling in shock. They described the beating as “senseless”.
Due to the severity of the attack, police have assembled a task team of detectives to track down the robbers.
Ajimudin’s devastated parents, Fatima and Sayed Jaluddin, who drove to Port Elizabeth from Kimberley after being alerted to the attack, said yesterday their son’s condition remained critical and he was still in a coma.
“When we got the phone call, we packed the car and drove to Port Elizabeth straight away.
“It is the worst phone call to get, hearing that your son is unconscious after being beaten in an attack,” Fatima said. “We are just hoping he pulls through.” Shocked home owner Robert Large, who was in Durban on business at the time, flew back to Port Elizabeth on Saturday after hearing about the attack. “He [Ajimudin] is just such a nice guy. “He is a bright youngster – always peaceful, passive and with just such a pleasant nature,” he said.
“My wife and I feel extremely guilty. You sit and wonder if there was anything else we could have done to prevent this.”
Ajimudin had been living in their back flatlet for about month, Large said.
“The main house alarm went off at about 4am on Saturday and Atlas Security came to check.
“At that stage it was determined that the robbers had gained entry to the main house but obviously took off when the alarm went off,” he said.
“Only after a check and hearing some strange noises inside did they find him [Ajimudin] unconscious in the flatlet.”
Large said it looked as if the robbers forced the flatlet’s sliding door open while Ajimudin was sleeping.
“All I can think is that the men took his bat and savagely beat him while he was sleeping.
“He is still very critical and would have died if not found when he was.
“The only thing we can see that is stolen is his cellphone and laptop. It appears that they jumped over the electric fence on the front wall to get into the back section.”
Since the attack, several of Ajimudin’s friends and concerned residents have been phoning Large.
“Everyone is shaken up by this,” he said.
Police found a cricket bat covered in blood lying next to the wall the robbers scaled.
Atlas Security operations manager Monty Montgomery said the armed response officer became suspicious when he found keys and a remote lying outside the flatlet. “On searching the flat, all the cupboards were found to be empty and the clothes piled on top of the couch.
“Muffled groaning was heard coming from underneath the clothing which is when he [Ajimudin] was found.
“They had placed a duvet over him and then piled all the clothes on top,” he said.
“When they removed the clothing they found Ajimudin lying in a pool of blood.
“He was covered with a duvet which was drenched in blood,” Montgomery said.
Gardmed Ambulance owner Dave Gardener said paramedics stabilised Ajimudin at the scene.
“He was still unconscious, unresponsive and covered in blood. The injuries are that of being badly beaten,” he said.
Police and forensic experts scoured the scene for hours gathering evidence.
Humewood station commander Brigadier Ronald Koll said that due to the extent of Ajimudin’s injuries, the case was being investigated as attempted murder.
“Details remain sketchy because he is still unconscious but I have assigned a team of detectives to the case,” he said.
By late yesterday, police were still following up leads and no arrests had been made.

    Asadullah Ajimudin
THE ventilator which is keeping alive an NMMU student, who was savagely bludgeoned with a cricket bat in his Summerstrand flatlet on Saturday, is expected to be switched off today.
Second-year computer science and applied mathematics student Asadullah Ajimudin, 19, who was beaten into a coma during a robbery, received his last medical treatment yesterday morning.
By 8.30pm yesterday, the treatment had been unsuccessful in reducing the extensive swelling on the brain caused by the attack.
Asadullah’s family were keeping vigil at his bedside last night.

Terrible story. A reminder of the brutality inherent in the animals who prey on our society as a whole.

    This.

Also an unsavoury reminder that when evil intent is present, any suitable tool will do the job. The focus should be on the people who perpetrate the evil act, not the methods they choose with which to do it. Maar nou ja, preaching to the choir.
