I know. In this case a softer bullet might have killed quicker. But I have also had experiences where a fragile bullet got drifted a couple of inches off course, hitting bone instead of just muscle and leading to a long follow up due to under penetration.
There is no such thing as a perfect bullet. Having said that, I do believe that expanding mono-metal bullets is the best type of bullet for most hunting scenarios. Even if it fails to expand, which in my experience is extremely rare, a small hole through the vitals is better than a bullet that does not reach the vitals because it disintegrated or over expanded.

I hunt mainly in the flat Karoo and surrounds, and the average shot we take is in the region of 200m. That's just the nature of the topography. You just can't get any closer. I've only ever taken one shot at game off the shoulder in my life. The rest are off a bipod or sticks. The locals make a lot of effort with respect to reloading for accuracy, because of the distances we shoot.

Messor stalks so well that, " after inspecting the trophy value of animal he back tracks to reduce meat damage"
Messor shoots so far that he can only hunt in winter other wise the meat has spoiled by the time he walks to retrieve it.

who posted this some years back ?

Sounds like something I posted. I said he stalks so well, by the time he finished stalking he needs to move backwards in order to make space for the rifle between himself and the animal.

    Attachment 34229

Whilst taking stock of my bullets I found this souvenir. This 200gr 375 bullet killed a big BlueWB bull. It entered on the right on about the last rib and broke the opposite shoulder, hence the bent over tip.

Probably stalked backwards 200m before he could shoot.

On the left are 3 270gr Peregrine VLR4 .375 bullets.
The one on the far left (obviously) unfired, the second recovered from a shoulder shot on a buffalo bull at ±100m, the third recovered from a spine shot on, an already dead, buffalo bull at ±5m. Both these bullets were fired at ±2600fps. Retained weights 261.0gr (96.6%) and 258.9gr (95.9%).
The bull ran ±100m after the first shot and was dead when we got to it.

The bullet on the far right is a 307gr Peregrine VRG2 solid, fired into a wounded waterbuck bull at ±150m. The bull was running straight away, bullet hit just to the right of the anus and was recovered under the skin on the neck.
