Re: Bullet performance data base
Good show!
Anybody still hunting with bad bullets now shurely has only himself to blame. So many options available.

Re: Bullet performance data base
I've lost count of the hours I've spent listening to the imagined abilities, and disabilities, of various cartridges with no one paying any attention to the type of bullet used. In the end, the bullet is the only part of the cartridge or rifle that actually kill an animal.
Also, often forgotten, is the part that bullet placement plays.

An as it goes, no good intention goes uncorrupted...
There seems to be a notion that if you can shoot tiny groups at postcode distances with a PRS setup, that translates into the automatic ability to place a bullet "correctly" in hunting scenarios. This is then used as the motivation to "hunting with the [match] bullets I know, because I can place them precisely." This is generally followed by the argument of "no matter how strong a bullet is, it helps nothing if placed incorrectly", as if the two arguments are two sides of the same coin, which they aren't.

Re: Bullet performance data base
In fairness, bullet placement>bullet quality/construction. So the argument that "it helps nothing if placed incorrectly" is true. But I take your point about trying to justify the compromise that match bullets represent.
Bullet selection is an easily-controlled variable. Bullet placement less so - animal movement, bad wind reads, bad technique, a flinch and even natural group variation can all affect bullet placement and thus bullet placement is a more difficult variable to manage than the simple choice of what bullet one uses.
I suppose the conflation of the match bullet argument is that bullet selection somehow assists with bullet placement. Possibly true as far as tighter groupings go but cannot mitigate for most of the factors mentioned above.

Re: Bullet performance data base
The thing with the bullet placement > construction argument is that the viable target atea becomes quadratically smaller (literally) the weaker your bullet construction is, because you need to thread it between all sorts of bones, thicker muscles and other obstacles.
In a match scenario your target is "on the outside", you only need to make a mark on a piece of paper or steel. In hunting, your target is in the inside of an animal. That target isnt necessarily small, but it may be well protected, and that protection also depends on the orientation of the animal to the shooter. Strong match bullets gives you the margin to get to the target, even if it means going through the "protection".
No proponent of strong bullets ever said that a strong bullet negates the need to correctly place the bullet into the target.
Also, there seems to be a perception with the "my match bullets can shoot a gnat off a squirrel's ball" crowd that hunting bullets cannot reach the required precision. We have ample evidence onbthis forum and thread of groups achieved with SBCs. My own and friends' experience with various bonded bullets, as well as monos (Peregrines in my case) prove that MOA and sub-MOA precision is easily achieved. So there's no reason from a precision viewpoint NOT to use premium bullets.
This leads me to believe that the only reason people choose not to use them, is due to laziness, perhaps compounded by stinginess...
