Spyderco Persistence G10 vs Byrd Meadowlark 2 FRN

Let me start out by saying that I know pretty much nothing about knives except for some youtube videos, and I am probably comparing apples to pears here

I want a nice utility knife. If I didnt care about the money, I would probably buy a Delica 4.

Size wise, these 2 seem pretty similar.
They also have the same blade steel, 8Cr13MoV

The big differences are of course G10 vs FRN, liner lock vs back lock, name and price.

The Spyderco will cost R855 to my door via Bid or Buy.
The Byrd will cost R595 to my door from SharpEdge (http://www.sharpedge.co.za/spyderco-...rk-2-frn-plain)

R260 difference. (50% difference at this price point)

To me, it seems really that my largest consideration is liner lock vs back lock.

What would you do? Is this a landslide towards the Spyderco?

No I would not say a Persistence is far better than a Meadowlark at all.

The Byrd has a forward finger choil and the Percie does not.
This is over the G10 and FRN consideration; this is really the choice you are making.

I have a G10 Meadowlark and think its the best buy in its class.

They are probably made in the same factory so don’t think of any "landslide" to Spyderco branded over Byrd.

The slightly bigger Tenacious is an awesome knife, why go smaller with the Persistence?

I was about to ask the same question. Definitely add the Tenacious to your options. Fantastic EDC knife, that can be used for a number of applications. I find the blade size a bit more useful than that of the Persistence

Definitely agree with Shark and Marsh, the slight increase for the tenacious is well worth it...besides you'll end up buying one anyway :D

If push comes to shove, meadow ftw...or even have a gander at the cara cara g10

Byrd Cara Cara 2 is also worth looking at. Bit bigger but a lovely utility knife.

TBH there is not a lot of diffirence between these two knives. Both use 8Cr13Mov steel , which is a decent entry level steel. It takes a nice enough edge and although it wont keep the edge for long, it is easy to sharpen. While I feel the back lock would be stronger than a liner lock, I feel that a linerlock is good enough for an edc knife. I personally feel you are paying more for the persistence because it has the Spyderco name on it (even though Byrd is also Spyderco) and because it has G10 scales. I like G10 a lot more than FRN handle scales tbh. I own the Spyderco Ambitious and Tenacious of this particular 'range' of Spyderco knives and for the money they are hard to beat. I dont think you can go wrong with either but I personally would choose the persistence

thanks for the replies.

stopped at canal walk today, and handled the persistence, tenacious, and the delica 4 (couldnt find a byrd in person, and wanted to feel G10 vs FRN).

G10 just felt more solid.

Tenacious vs Persistence. in my hand, both felt very nice, and I would be happy with either. liked both blade sizes. but then the Tenacious pushes the price up another R250, and after wanting to spend R500ish, I now have to spent R1000+, so I went with the middle ground

I would definately have considered a G10 Meadowlark 2, but I couldnt find any in my local online searching.

So, I ended up ordering the Persistence, I am sure I will be happy with this. Probably wont be the last anyway (going by my collection of Wusthof kitchen knifes)
