ID this cartridge
Hi all collectors of ammo.
I have recently come into possession of an inert round and would very much like a bit more information on this specimen.
It seems be be similar to the 7.62x51 or .308 Winchester, but without the extractor groove.
Berdan cased.
Case length = 52.38mm
Bullet diameter = 7.77mm

Re: ID this cartridge
South African military 7.62x51 or also known as 308.
I have several cases with that exact headstamp.
Made in 1980, very good ammo.

Re: ID this cartridge
Base looks machined, perhaps re-stamped.

Re: ID this cartridge
My (uneducated) guess would be that this one simply slipped through the QC, with the extractor groove missing. I have seen cases and ammo with other parts and features missing before...
But it could have been assembled from reject components, just for the hell of it.
It can surely not serve any usefull purpose, without the extractor groove?
