I did a little googling as I have not seen/used this chemical before, and found a reference to it being used to clean skulls. What does it specifically do?

As for caustic soda, it 'dissolves' the tissue, even tough things like sinew.

Black Letchwe. I have subsequently been thinking about chemicals to use to treat horns and thought that some of the wood borer treatments that are available commercially, would make those horns totally impervious to this pest.

I got some Hydrogen Peroxide cream -40 concentrate per vol- from the local hair salon. Pained the skull -careful not to get any on the horns. Left it for 72 hours. Skull came out pristine white, and bleached any stains.

    Interesting post.

I have a question around longterm maintenance, what can you use or should you use to make sure the mount stay in good condition.

Reviving this thread. I did a blesbuck last year which was fun. basically simmered for about an hour with horns out of the water. power sparyed to remove the flesh, removed bones in ear canal, cleaned out inside of skull, soaked skull in mix of peroxide and water - cannot remember the ratio but will check as written down.

Going to do another blesbuck but I did struggle to remove the horns from the bone - any advice? I didn't want to simemr the horn itself so that there was no discolouration.
