HOPPES LUBRICATING OIL
Has anyone used the Hoppes Lubricating oil (orange plastic bottle) yet who can comment if it is worthwhile buying.
Would the Hoppes Lub Oil be a better option to lube your pistol (Glock) than say a oil like Balistol?. I would like to know if they are the same thing and do the same job.
Thanks

Re: HOPPES LUBRICATING OIL
The traditional gun oils were all natural products. Many still are.
Sperm oil - impossible to get
Lanolin oil
Castor oil (DEGUMED) Castrol R comes to mind but I am not sure if it is still available.
There are more but Lanolin and Castor oil are still available. Case lub oil is lanolin oil.
Modern equivalents are long chain oils, synthetic oil.
I have a very simple test. I lub a case and START it in the resizer. If it sticks, squeaks or groans I reject it. Note the start because you don't want a stuck case in your resizer die.
Wynns charge I used when I ran out of case lube simply because I had some. I would not use it for long term storage. Lanolin oil is far better for that but I have also used Wynns charge used it for lubing some of my often cleaned firearms. Others have used STP. Most of these motor oil enhancers contain waxes, be careful of long term storage. Many vegetable oils also have a tendency to harden if not dewaxed or degummed.
Most this stuff is available for a fraction of the cost of very expensive "wonder lube" increase your gas mileage commercial gun oils.
For virtually all my firearm working parts I simply use Mo-di general purpose grease. And Ed's Red with synthetic motor oil as the replacement of ATF for cleaning and lubing all other metal parts.
But then I do things differently.... and I am not selling anything nor making claims for wonder results. Firearms need good boundary lubrication (look it up) and high pressure lubs on the trigger mechanism. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boundary_lubrication
Here is a page well worth reading

Do note the comments on WD40, gear oils and non-synthetic motor oils.
STP and ATF is one suggested mix.

Re: HOPPES LUBRICATING OIL
It is hard to beat this for performance:
Par Rogers is not being sponsored and he is gtg

EWL is used on high performance high round count semi-auto rifles with excellent results.
On a pistol one would not need the extreme performance of EWL and the Gun Lube will work excellently. Add a bit of EWG it works great.
http://www.slip2000.com/articles.html
I have been using Slip2000 for the past year in my AR, LM, Glocks, M&Ps, Remington shotguns (pump and SA) and I am thoroughly happy with the products.
Slip2000 was designed for use in hard working combat firearms and military hardwear - that means it needs to stay where it is needed and not dissipate, evaporate or run out of the firearms and to prevent carbon fouling making the firearm inoperable. Most traditional lubes were designed for hunting rifles and OU shotguns.
Slip2000 products will be available for use, free of charge, by competitors at the 2010 IDPA Africa Championships on 8 and 9 Aug at the Eeufees Shooting Range in Pta. Products will also be for sale there.Last edited by DS; 03-08-2010 at 07:34.

Re: HOPPES LUBRICATING OIL
I happened to read this article tonight and found it pretty interesting. Apparently, I've been lubing my pistol slides wrong this whole time.
